Woodinville History
|
Woodinville, as an incorporated City, is very young. It was not until 1993 that they became the 32nd City of King County and 270th in Washington state. The earliest claims were in the 1870s when young pioneers came by means of the Sammamish River. Among the first known settlers were a couple named Ira and Susan Woodin, hence the eventual naming of the City. Initially, the area was dense forest with trees so large that even stumps were often used as housing shelter! The area was dominated by the logging and shingle industries, but eventually as families settled this gave way to farming as a way of life thanks mainly to the rich soil from the river valley. The first school was in the home of the Woodin family, and eventually thanks to a land grant a proper school was built. The school was destroyed by fire in 1908, but rebuilt within the year. That very same building served as the first City Hall even until 2001! Today Woodinville is home to boutique wineries, retail outlets and still retains its family-oriented atmosphere. It has also been recognized as a "Tree City USA" every year since 1996, a great honor to its forested roots speaking both figuratively and literally.
